One Whitehall Place

Alfred Waterhouse, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, was commissioned by The National Liberal Club to design the building which now stands in Whitehall Place. The first stone was laid on 4th November 1884 by William Gladstone and continues to have pride of place in our cellars today. The building was completed in 1887 and was used on all floors as The National Liberal Club until 1985.

This Grade 1 listed building, along with Waterhouse's famous designs for the Natural History Museum and The Prudential, are considered landmarks of London. Originally the building featured naked electric light bulbs – one of the first public buildings to do so in the 19th century. It would not be appropriate to reproduce the light bulbs of the time and so we have chosen to hang antique Victorian metal chandeliers in all suites, all faithfully reproduced to Alfred Waterhouse's designs in some of his later buildings.

The Gladstone Library housed over 30,000 books, which are now kept in trust at Bristol University and have been painstakingly replaced with wooden fascias in the exact location of the original book.

The Reading & Writing Room adjacent to the Library allowed members to remove books to a lounge and to smoke in what was originally used as a billiard room. This room enjoys stunning views across the River Thames to the London Eye.

The River Room was previously used as the Ladies' Lounge of the National Liberal Club.
